NAIROBI — Amara Okonkwo, 34, told reporters Wednesday that she was entering 2026 with renewed hope and determination, unaware that the coming year would be the most devastating of her life.

"I genuinely feel like this is my year," she said. By October, she will have lost her job, apartment, two significant relationships and her childhood dog, Biscuit. "Things are just clicking, you know?"

Okonkwo had spent weeks journaling about gratitude, setting goals and assembling a vision board featuring travel destinations she will never visit. The circumstances preventing the trips remained hidden from her.

"2025 was rough," she said, pausing to sip her chai. "But I did the work. I'm finally ready to receive abundance."

Friends describe Okonkwo as genuinely kind and undeserving of what is coming.

Asked about her goals, Okonkwo mentioned career growth, stronger relationships and learning her grandmother's jollof recipe. She let out a small, contented laugh, unaware it was one of her last for quite some time.

At press time, Okonkwo bought a 2026 planner with "Best Year Ever" embossed on the cover. ■
