Pope Leo XIV stunned worshippers in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday when he stopped during a public blessing to pick up a Eucharist lying near a drain and ate it without explaining why.

The pope had been speaking about peace when he noticed the host on the ground. He walked over, looked at it for several seconds, wiped it once against his sleeve, and placed it in his mouth. He then returned to the microphone and continued speaking.

Witnesses said the moment appeared deliberate. "He definitely wanted us to see him do it," said one pilgrim. "Afterward, he looked around like he was waiting for someone to challenge him."

Vatican officials have not said how the Eucharist ended up on the ground or whether the pope knew how long it had been there. One official said the Holy Father had "handled the matter personally" and declined to elaborate.

The act has already been interpreted as a statement about humility, reverence, courage, waste, obedience, and the limits of Vatican sanitation policy, but the pope confirmed none of these interpretations.

Later that afternoon, Leo passed through the same area and briefly inspected the ground again. There was nothing there. ■
