MANILA — Star Magic announced Wednesday that pop group BINI will enter medically supervised hibernation pods for six months as part of an incubation process in the entertainment sector.
The eight members were sealed into individual biosleep chambers at an undisclosed facility in Antipolo, Rizal, shortly after a brief farewell ceremony attended by roughly 300 fans and an anesthesiologist. Each pod has been calibrated to cycle between REM sleep and light theta-wave states, conditions that Star Magic's creative director said were optimal for subconscious melody formation.
"BINI's emotionally resonant vocal performances correlate with periods of extreme fatigue," the creative director said during a press briefing. "Full hibernation was the logical next step."
Star Magic launched a companion product line tied to the “BINIbernation” initiative within hours of the announcement, with matching pajama sets and a ₱2,400 sleep mask that plays low-frequency BINI humming on a loop.
A premium tier subscription allows fans to watch a live feed of the pods, though the agency clarified the cameras capture aura data only.
The hashtag #WakeUpBINI trended nationally for nine hours, despite the group having been asleep for less than two.
Music industry observers offered cautious assessments. One Manila-based entertainment journalist noted the strategy was "unprecedented, if you don't count all the groups whose labels shelved them for six months and called it a hiatus."
He asked not to be named, citing a preference for continued event invitations.
The pods are expected to open in late 2026. Star Magic confirmed that each member will be handed a microphone immediately upon regaining consciousness to capture whatever comes out first.
No timeline was provided for when the members would be allowed to eat solid food. ■
